Keep an eye out for the first little ringed plover arrivals - expected soon!

A small, rotund wading bird normally arrives in the UK from sub-Saharan Africa mid-March and leaves by the end of July. It nests on bare gravel, sandy riverbanks and reservoirs. Like other plovers, it stands and looks out for invertebrates and crustaceans , running forward, pecking and consuming it’s prey before standing still again.

The little ringed plover is daintier than the ringed plover and has black bill and a bright yellow ring around the eye.

The first Spring migrants have Arrived.

The first reports of spring migrants arriving back in Britain have started to come in.

The northern wheatear was the first reported on Wednesday 17 February.

The Northern Wheatear makes one of the longest journeys of any passerine. It migrates north from Sub-Saharan Africa in Spring to breed in Europe, Greenland, Alaska, Canada and northern and Central Asia. It then returns to Africa in the Autumn.
